Continuing the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the city of Gdansk and as we walk through the streets of the Old Town we have the opportunity to stop at the stall of the amber seller and truly admire the variety of colors and shapes of amber. On the next street there is artwork to be appreciated and if you have time you can sit and have a wee chat with an interesting character.

Amber is a lovely stone, thanks for sharing.

It is lovely, but it is not a stone. It is a fossilized wood resin. It has such a warm glow and feel 🙂

I don’t know what to say to that. Amber IS a fossilized resin of cellulose matter, wood, but in jewelry sales I believe the constant is ‘What is the stone’? And sometimes that ‘stone’ is ‘diamond’ or ‘topaz’ or ‘pearl’ or ‘amber’ NONE of which are stone. I have several nice amber pieces.
Oddly, I was invited to change my major to geology by the head of the department after I excelled in one of their open courses. Amber is variable on the Mohs scale due to the variability of the cellulose source. It comes in at around 2-3 but it’s tough for that level and has a conchoidal fracture.
And I will always put my foot in it by using the wrong word. Please, forgive me. 🙂

Wow! I am grateful for all this information. Now I definitely know more. Let’s just agree that amber is beautiful and we both like it and wear it 🙂
