Practically every street in the old part of Wroclaw will amaze you. The apartment houses are unique, beautiful, and each one is different.
The first floor is a store of some kind, a cafe, or a restaurant. From the second floor up there are apartments. If you look closely you will discover that the height of the windows gets smaller as the floors go up. That has an explanation. The first and second story apartment is the most grand – higher ceilings, bigger windows. Before the war wealthy people lived in them. Next one or two floors would have cheaper accommodation with smaller flats. Finally the attic space would have been for the domestic help, where people would have just rooms.
Nowadays all of the floors have separate apartments of the varying sizes. Some are used as offices if the location is good, or remodeled for small private businesses like language schools.
