After walking for some time through the tunnel, we come to the room that houses all kinds of different types of machinery that was used in the mines. As I look at them trying to understand their purpose, some of them look almost human.
In a different section I find a collection of telephones that were used to communicate between various sections of workers. Perhaps when all is quiet and the visitors are gone, by picking up the receiver one may hear voices from the past?
Miners in general were religious people. The very real possibility of losing one’s life any day when descending deep below the surface made them dependent on God. Their special patron is Saint Barbara, who had her shrine there, where the people worked.
Soon after we once again enter into the metal cages of the elevator and in complete darkness ascent back to the surface and into the sunshine.
I love imagery like this – such a contrast to what we use these days… Nice post
